He was son of the late John James&bsp; Carruth, Sr. and Mattie Williams Carruth and husband of Alma Morris Carruth.

He was owner of Carruth Furniture Company and a member of Landrum First Baptist Church for 73 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, was a former Landrum City councilman, a former member of the Landrum Fire Department and helped form the Landrum Sports Association.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, John James Carruth III (Tammy) of Landrum, Michael Lynn Carruth (Marianne) of Tryon, and Steven Wayne Carruth (Beverly) of Spartanburg; a sister, Mary Bagwell of Landrum; 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Carruth Gordon, and a brother, Leroy G. &dquo;Fat&dquo; Carruth.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009 at Petty Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, conducted by Rev. Jimmy Camp. Entombment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
