Sunny View Elementary School won&squo;t need its three portable classrooms much longer.

An eight-classroom addition is rapidly taking shape next to the existing main school building at Sunny View. The addition, which has the same design as a recent addition at Tryon Elementary School, will provide some much needed space.

Sunny View Principal Rick Howell says the school will use the addition for 2nd through 5th grade classes, leaving the main building for kindergarten and first grade classes, an expanded computer lab, the cafeteria and other classes.

The space means itinerent classes, such as music and art, will no longer have to move from classroom to classroom and share space with other classes.

Principal Howell says the school has needed additional space for years, and he&squo;s looking forward to getting students out of the portable classrooms.

&dquo;This will take care of us for some time,&dquo; said Howell of the addition. &dquo;We&squo;ll be glad to have it done.&dquo;

Work on the Sunny View addition has been delayed slightly by rain but is otherwise on track to be completed early next year.

The Sunny View addition is the latest in a series of upgrades and additions that Polk County Schools has carried out to make sure each school has adequate facilities. The school system has addressed facility needs at every school over the past several years.
