Ed Wharton

Born Aug. 6, 1928, in Alderson, W.Va., he was the son of the late Weir Edward Wharton Sr. and Ola Mary Spence Wharton. An honors graduate of the University of Virginia electrical engineering school, he was a retired electrical engineer. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a member of Second Presbyterian Church where he was a choir member, a member of S.P.E.B.S.Q.A. (Barbershop Harmony Society) and the Spartanburg Symphony Chorus, and performed many years with the Spartanburg Little Theatre.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Martha Elizabeth Wright Wharton; two daughters, Mary Beth Wagner of Moore, S.C., and Barbara Wharton of Raleigh; three sons, John Wharton of Spartanburg, Bill Wharton, and Steve Wharton, all of Campobello; two granddaughters, three grandsons, and two great-grandsons. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

A memorial service with military rites by the S.C. State Guard was held Sunday, Dec. 28 at Second Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, conducted by the Rev. Steven H. Rhodes.
