Tryon will soon be seeking a part-time economic development director to help attract more business to the town.

Tryon Town Council Tuesday approved spending up to $1,000 per month for a minimum of two years to help fund the position. Tryon Downtown Development Association (TDDA) and Tryon Tourism Development Authority (TTDA) have also agreed to contribute funding for the position.

Councilman Dennis Durham said the idea has been in the works since he&squo;s been with the town. Durham said the position needs to be filled with someone who has passion for Tryon.

&dquo;Especially during these slow economic times, we need to make an effort to get people to come to Tryon,&dquo; Durham said. &dquo;(We need to do) anything we can do to attract tourists to our town.&dquo;

The town will have the final say on hiring the individual and will oversee the position. The employee will work part-time with no benefits and will work with the TDDA and TTDA as well as the town.

The town plans to seek the economic development director as soon as possible.
