He will be able to collect&bsp; 80 percent of his retirement benefits at age 50 and at age 55 he will be able to collect full retirement benefits. His benefits will be based on his last four highest paid salaries, which would include the last two years as sheriff and his last two years as the Columbus police chief.

Abril will also have the opportunity to collect his 401(k) retirement which will be taxed if he withdraws it before the age of 59.5.

Polk County also offers insurance benefits under the federal COBRA law to employees who have left the county&39;s employment. Under this plan, employees are eligible to continue at their own expense their previous insurance coverage for two years. Abril&squo;s insurance would cost him $448 per month.

Abril was indicted and arrested on statutory rape charges just a few months before he was elected sheriff in 2006. The allegations stemmed from incidents that occurred between 1987 and 1989 in Polk County while he was a law enforcement officer involving two girls who were 10 and 11 years old at the time.

Abril will spend four months under house arrest beginning on Dec. 1. He will then spend five years on probation, three of which will be supervised. A two-year jail term sentence was suspended and he won&squo;t serve time unless he violates probation within that five years of probation.
