Marilyn Highlander

She was born June 25, 1921 in Clinton, Okla., the daughter of James D. and Madonna Faye Greening Bailey. She married John P. Highlander in Goldsboro, N.C. on Dec. 24, 1942. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2000.

She is survived by three nieces, Sarah (Stephen Bultema) Highlander of Houston, Texas, Nancy (Peter) Ellefson of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Susan (Reed) Fritz of Dallas Texas; two nephews John (Alicia) Highlander of Chicago Ill., and Steven (Christa) Highlander of Austin Texas, six great nieces and two great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one son, Jon Highlander in 1947.

She was the director of admissions for the college of liberal arts and commerce for the University of Iowa for two years. She was co-owner of Home Accessory Business in Fresno, Calif. She was also involved with Commercial Radio in Goldsboro and Indianapolis, Ind.

She graduated from Mabelle Scott Rancho School in Southern California in 1939. She received her associate&squo;s degree from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and her bachelor&squo;s degree from the University of Iowa in 1942. She has lived in Iowa, Wisconsin, Hawaii, California and North Carolina since 1997. She was a member of the PEO Chapter B in Hendersonville.

She volunteered for the American Red Cross and the Cancer Society. She was a member of the Ikebana International in Hawaii and Fresno. She was a member of the Columbus Presbyterian Church in Columbus.

Graveside services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. David Parker will officiate. Visitation will be from 12-1 p.m. Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.
