Laugh with the Foreigner &Upstairs Artspace turns 30

&bsp;Tonight Tryon Little Theatre opens The Foreigner by Larry Shue tonight at Tryon Fine Arts Center. This Obie and Outer Critics circle award-winning play brings Off-Broadway comedy to Tryon. Set in a fishing lodge in rural Georgia, the all star local cast will have you laughing away your blues. Charlie Baker played by newcomer Harry Grymes is forced to go on vacation by his dying wife with his buddy Froggy played by Dan Kimble. Charlie&squo;s shyness around strangers inspires Froggy to tell everyone he&squo;s from an exotic country where they don&squo;t speak English. The strangers get stranger as one by one they reveal their secrets to Charlie. Cathy Millwood, Steve Porter, Tena Greene Porter, Henry Bright and Jack Carruth fill the shoes of these quirky rural residents under the direction of Steve Carlisle this weekend only November 20-23. Jonathan Byrd of Carrborro, NC returns to The Purple Onion tonight with his inspired folk music. Hailed as sounding like a &dquo;young Doc Watson&dquo; in Southeast Performer Magazine, he brings a collection of original music built from the sounds of traditional southern ballads tonight at 7:30 p.m. Friday Buck the Recession Outdoor concert at the SkunkFarm 4063 Jordan Road, Greer with The Waybacks plus Ron Dubar Band and Town Mountain. You may have heard The Waybacks at the Blue Ridge BBQ Festival this past summer. Peter Eisenbrown who booked them for the BBQ sings their praises and encourages others to join him out at the farm for an evening of great music in a beautiful concert setting. Saturday Upstairs Artspace presents their Anniversary Gala November 22 from 5-9 p.m. The event coincides with the opening of &dquo;String of Pearls: 30 years of Upstairs Art&dquo; and features work by the plethora of artists who&squo;s work has shown at the gallery in the past three decades. The Pickin&squo; Parlor which started at the Gallery will provide meet and greet music along with Bob Childs on one of his Ugly Boy wood flutes. The evening is full of fun adventures including a treasure hunt, &dquo;Paint, Mess, Stick&dquo; party art project, transforming a chair into a work of art, wearable art models roaming the space, a craft raffle and more. Gala tickets are priced reminiscent of the founding year and&bsp;may be purchased calling 828-858-2828 or at the door. Chuck & Norm&squo;s new band debuts at Elmo&squo;s in Tryon.
