Born in Denmark, he was the son of the late Niels and Anna Christiansen Nielsen. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was a navigator in the Army Air Corp and stationed in England during WWII. Mr. Nielsen was a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society. He was the widower of Theodora Carlyn Nielsen, who died in 2006.

Surviving is his daughter, Karla R. Nielsen of Bristol, R.I.
