Armed with a small group of loud fans, the Lady Rams attempted to slay a giant.
The Lady Cardinals, however, are in a groove and have dominated anyone that has come their way in recent weeks.
That domination continued with a 3-0 second round playoff victory over Chesterfield Wednesday night.
The Lady Cardinals were up 6-3 in the first game when Lindsey Ellswick took the ball on serve. The junior rattled off ten straight points to give Landrum a 16-3 and the Lady Cardinals never looked back, finishing the first game 25-8.
Ellswick is taking advantage of extended playing time after an injury to setter Stephanie Johnston. Even now that Johnston is back, Ellswick is still serving lights out for the Lady Cardinals.
It feels really good, Ellswick said. Its your chance to shine. You get to help your team out.
In the second game, the Landrum domination continued, although the Lady Rams showed some fight.
Up 5-3, Sarah Bruce set up a Caroline Cann kill. Chelsea Smith took over serve and served six straight points.
Chesterfield fought back and the game went back and forth until the Lady Cardinals took a 17-10 lead on a Molly Corn kill. Corn served three points, including two kills by Doty, and gave Landrum a 20-10 lead.
With a 23-13 lead, Johnston served the final two points.
In the final game, Chesterfield tied the game up early 6-6. Johnston then set up another Cann kill to give Landrum serve back.
Cann served up seven straight points, which included three kills and a block kill from Jordan Corn.
The Lady Rams interupted the Lady Cardinal run briefly. But with a 14-7 lead, Jordan Corn served ten straight points to finish the match 25-7.
The girls stayed up and played well, head coach Denise Riske said.
Landrum will play Greenville Tech Charter at home Monday at 6 p.m.
