He was born on Feb. 7, 1940, in Columbus to Otis and Thelma Greene Cantrell.

He attended Tryon High School and graduated from North Carolina State University. He worked as senior nuclear engineer for Progress Energy (CP&L), retiring in 2002.

He was predeceased by his parents. Survivors include two aunts, Irene Greene and Celia Greene, and a number of cousins.&bsp; In honor of Kermit&squo;s wishes, no formal services will be held.
