The City of Landrum got approval this week for a $200,000 S.C. Department of Transportation (DOT) Enhancement Grant to put a sidewalk on one side of N. Randolph Street. The city will have to match the grant with $50,000 for a $250,000 total project.

Landrum is also requesting further funding from the County Transportation Committee (CTC) of Spartanburg County. If awarded, the extra funds could enable the sidewalk to be extended from the north end of N. Randolph to Hwy. 14.

Rep. Bob Walker and DOT Commissioner Chairman Hugh Atkins came to Landrum&squo;s City Council meeting Tuesday to make the announcement.

Atkins congratulated the city and said he thinks Landrum is one of the best cities around. He also paid tribute to Walker, who Atkins said does more than any politician he knows for the people who elected him.

Walker congratulated Landrum and said this is the city&squo;s third enhancement grant over the past several years and that speaks well of the city.

Landrum was turned down for the grant last year for a project that would have constructed sidewalks on both sides of the street at an estimated cost of about $470,000. The city&39;s current project will construct a sidewalk on only one side of the street.

Several residents from N. Randolph Street attended Tuesday&squo;s meeting to hear the announcement. Residents in the past have requested improvements be made to the neighborhood as part of the city&squo;s downtown improvements.

City administrator Steve Wolochowicz said he plans to send out requests for proposals on the sidewalk project next month and construction could begin as early as December or January.
