Columbus to celebrate Columbus Day Saturday

Published 4:47 pm Thursday, October 9, 2008

An excellent variety of entertainment is scheduled that includes in addition to musicians the Oxy-Morons, Asheville&squo;s premiere Improv Comedy Troupe who will put on a fun-filled two-hour performance beginning at noon.

The OxyMorons&squo; unique brand of edgy, sometimes irreverent, but always funny short-form improv shows have been a cornerstone of the Asheville comedy scene since 2002. They play short-form improv games that are built solely on audience suggestions. Some of their games are familiar, tried and true versions you&squo;ve seen on TV.

They also pride themselves on creating brand-new, original, never-before-seen games like &dquo;One-Minute MacGyver&dquo; or &dquo;Gods and Morons.&dquo;

Music kicks off at 10 a.m. with Rich Bauer, a local resident who is a fingerstyle guitarist playing &dquo;Piedmont&dquo; and ragtime blues. Rich is followed at 11 a.m. by Black Lightning, a folk/blues duo (also from Polk County) ‐ featuring Janet Sciacca, guitarist and song writer, and Nadine Naujoks, vocalist.

At noon, look for Walt Whitney and Ellen Trnka who thoroughly enjoy making all sorts of music ‐ blues, jazz, country, folk, standards, originals.

By popular demand, the Silver Travis Band returns to the Columbus stage at 1:30 p.m. This is the group with the album &dquo;One Monkey Don&squo;t Spoil the Show,&dquo; that hails originally from Spartanburg, but can be found entertaining fans all over the western Carolinas.

Greenville&squo;s True Blue starts around 3:30 p.m. doing their wide variety of blues ‐ from straight-ahead to Texas-style, jazzy…, and they write about half of all the material they play.

The headline act this year is Geoff Achison and The Soul Diggers, coming on at 6 p.m. Geoff was once called the best blues guitarist in Australia but, fortunately for the U.S., has relocated to this side of the ocean ‐ in fact to the Southeast (Atlanta.2)

Also an astounding vocalist, Geoff will be joined by his &dquo;Soul Diggers,&dquo; including bass, drums and electronic keyboard. This bunch tunefully displays their love for performing and for following in the footsteps of their great blues idols.

A handicap parking shuttle is available from the parking area off Main Street, behind the monument.
