Landrum and the community were still morning the loss of student Cole Quinn. That emotion presented itself in the form of Tyler Burrell for Landrum. Plagued all week by a sore ankle, Burrell stepped out onto the field inspired Friday night. That inspiration translated into two first quarter 14-yard touchdowns.
Dixie didnt respond until a little over five minutes left in the second quarter when Jamaal Byers scored. The Hornets follow with a successful two-point conversion to make the score 14-8 at halfime. The third quarter was spent in a stalemate as neither team could muster any advantage. But in the fourth quarter, Dixie struck again. With 4:45 left in the game, Mario Washington punched one in for the Hornets. The kick that followed was no good, leaving the score tied at 14-14. With the two teams deadlocked, the game moved into overtime. Each team took possession of the ball on the ten-yard line. On Landrums second play of overtime, quarterback Taylor Pate found Chris Pitts in the endzone for a touchdown. Jimbo Martin added the extra point. But then it was Dixies turn. After a short run, Washington took the ball on second down and punched it in. Dixie followed with a two-point conversion to win the game 22-21.
The boys played real hard from beginning to end, Landrum coach Russell Mahaffey said. Were that close. Were getting there.
