Cardinal band to perform Abba this year

The Cardinal Pride Marching Band of Landrum High School will be taking a detour from 2008 this season and will revert back to the 1970&squo;s.

The Cardinals will all be &dquo;dancing queens&dquo;…and kings this season as they take up the music of Abba, which has made a resurgence with the movie success of the broadway musical &dquo;Mamma Mia.&dquo;Abba music is the basis for the musical and movie.

This season, the Cardinals will play the songs &dquo;Mamma Mia,&dquo; &dquo;The Winner Takes It All,&dquo; &dquo;Money, Money, Money,&dquo; and &dquo;Dancing Queen.&dquo; In addition the show music, the Cardinals have a repertoire of over 30 pep tunes, band director Barry Bridwell said.

This year, the Cardinal Pride Marching Band has 36 members. Of that, 27 are high school students, nine are middle school students and seven are first-year marchers. The officers this year are as follows:

JaNita Wingo, Drum Major; Gurtej Sing, Band Captain; Ethan Wofford, Percussion Captain; Jonathan Wrenn, First Lieutenant; Chelsea Williams, Second Lieutenant; Briana Jackson, First Sergeant; Brandon Kilpatrick, Sergeant; and Audrey Peace, Sergeant.

Bridwell is assisted by colorguard instructor Natasha Mills. The band&squo;s booster club president is Lynnea Stadelmann.

The band will be appearing in all ten varsity football games, five parades and four competitions. The competitions will be at Boiling Springs on September 27, t the Chesnee Eagle Classic on October 11 and at the 1A Upper State Marching Championship at Clinton High School on October 18. The band will compete in a tournament on October 4, but it hasn&squo;t been announced yet.
