Elizabeth Augustine

Published 1:19 pm Friday, June 27, 2008

Elizabeth was born in Elyria, Ohio, and attended nearby Oberlin College, where she met Wilson Robert (Bill) Augustine, of Decatur, Ill. They were married in 1931. Three sons were born to the marriage: Robert, John and Davis, of whom the first two survive, as do 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren who reside in many areas in the United States and Canada.

In the early 1970s, Bill and Liz took a lengthy automobile tour, seeking the perfect spot to live in retirement. When they came down the old Saluda road and entered Tryon, they knew their quest was over. As it turned out, they lived more years here, by far, than they had ever lived anywhere else: it became their true home. They were fortunate enough to find many warm friendships here, and lived a full social life.

In the last four years of her life Liz needed a great deal of help in order to remain in her own home. The family wishes to thank her old friend Teresa Pate, who undertook the responsibility of organizing her care, and the devoted team of caregivers who gave Liz their love and support, especially Barbara Walker and Lucinda Thompson, who were there the whole time. When it became time for Liz to move, she found her last home at Ridge Rest. The family wishes to extend its gratitude to Ron and Linda Herman of Ridge Rest, and to the Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, which gave Liz such good end-of-life care in her final days.
