A Columbus man died and his wife was injured in a single vehicle crash Sunday night on Pea Ridge Road.

Darren Wayne Barnette, 42, of Columbus, was driving on Pea Ridge Road near U.S. 74 around 9:30 p.m. Sunday when he lost control of his truck and ran into a tree, according to N.C. Highway Patrol reports.

Barnette ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected and ran off the right side of the road and into a tree, according to Trooper Jason Sama. Both Barnette and his wife, Sandra, 52, were ejected from the truck.

Sandra Barnette was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where she was listed in stable condition as of Monday.

Darren Barnette died at the scene before emergency personnel could airlift him to a hospital.

Sama said neither appeared to have been wearing a seatbelt and troopers found open containers of alcohol in the truck.
