Born in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late John Edward and Gertrude Lentz Hildebrand. She was the widow of Vernon C. Johnson who died in 1994. Mrs. Johnson moved to Tryon in 1972, coming from Michigan. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan. Locally, she was a member of the Carolina Carriage Club and the Tryon Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Karen Sheridan and Elyse Brown. Also, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild and other family members.
