The Town of Tryon was denied funding in the first round of a N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant awards process.

Tryon Town Council made the announcement on Tuesday, saying they are hopeful they may still receive the funding during a second round of allocations scheduled in July.

Tryon requested $129,956 this year for the PARTF grant. The money is intended for improvements to Harmon Field, including renovations to the open air gymnasium, tennis court resurfacing, equestrian improvements such as a lungeing ring, announcer stand and storage area, landscaping, a volleyball/badminton and tether-ball court area and trash receptacles. The total cost for the improvements would be about $260,000, with pledges already being made from local organizations to provide the 50/50 matching portion. The Harmon Field Board of Supervisors has committed to contributing approximately $89,000 if the grant is funded in July.

The town has used PARTF monies in the last several years to make major improvements to Harmon Field and to help purchase part of the former Tryon Middle School.

The town was denied funding from PARTF last year.
