The Polk County Sheriff&squo;s Office is changing its firearm supply to use Glock 357 handguns.

The Glocks will replace the sheriff&squo;s office H&K (Heckler & Koch) 45 caliber handguns.

The Polk County Board of Commissioners met on Monday to approve the switch of firearms.

Polk County Sheriff Chris Abril said his officers want handguns that weigh less and added that the night sights on many of the H&K models will have to be recalibrated soon, which will cost about $100 per gun.

Abril said he has several female officers and the new guns will be better suited for them since they are smaller than the current firearms.

The new guns will be purchased after selling the H&Ks for $350 per gun.

Some county commissioners said they thought more money could be obtained for the old guns, but Sheriff Abril said this is the best deal he can get in order to receive the new guns before getting rid of the old guns.

The remaining money needed to purchase the Glocks will be taken from the sheriff&squo;s office&squo;s drug seizure money.
