She graduated from Vassar College in 1940, married Charles F. Tillinghast in 1941 and, after he had completed his service in the Navy during WWII, moved to Weaverville, N.C. She had a lifelong love of horses and was active in local horse activities throughout her life. Her last competition was at a combined training event at FENCE at the age of 76. She continued to ride the rough trails of Pisgah National Forest until the age of 85. Many in the local area will recall memorable rides with her.

She is survived by two daughters, Rowena Mason of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Harriet Goodrich of Columbus. Memorial service is May 24, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at Moody-Connelly Funeral Home in Brevard. Please make donations to the Sierra Club in her memory in lieu of flowers.
