n a primary carried over to election day on Tuesday in Polk County.

The county reported a total of 5,208 votes cast for the primary, including about 3,156 on election day, according to unofficial results from the Polk County elections office.

The record total for a primary represents about 36 percent of the registered voters in the county.

The highest turnout was in Tryon where 42.4 percent of the 3,177 registered voters cast a ballot in the primary.

The next highest turnout was at the Columbus ICC precinct at 39.2 percent, followed by Saluda at 36.2 percent. The lowest turnout was in Green Creek at 29.8 percent.

Turnout in other precincts was 30.9 percent in Coopers Gap, 33.3 percent in White Oak, and 33.3 percent at the high school precinct in Columbus.

Polk County High School was used as a new location this year for Columbus precinct 1, previously located at Stearns Gym. Workers at the precinct said they experienced no problems with the change.

Workers at several of the precincts reported a steady flow of voters throutout the day and only occasional short lines. Some workers said they saw a number of younger voters turn out for the primary, including some young voters who showed up at the high school asking to find the location of their precinct. Voters at the ICC precinct on Tuesday included one 17-year-old who will be 18 by the general election and therefore was eligible to vote in the primary.
