Funded by the North Carolina Ecology Enhancement program, the winter-long restoration will return the stream to its more natural course along its eastern flow through FENCE&squo;s 380 protected acres. Work began in early January at the stream&squo;s western end at FENCE&squo;s Equestrian Center to recreate the stream&squo;s original, looped course, reducing the stream&squo;s flow rate and increasingly troublesome bank erosion. Invasive, non-native vegetation is being removed and will be replaced with native grasses, shrubs and trees. The project also includes replacing a collapsed wooden pedestrian bridge with a concrete span and reinforcing a second, vehicular bridge.The remediation project, given final approval by the FENCE board last summer, is being supervised by Baker Engineering, an environmental engineering firm based in Charlotte. Work is scheduled to be completed during the latter half of March.
