&bsp;(photo by Joey Millwood)Landrum football coach and Athletic Director John Cann has been very nostalgic lately.On Wednesday afternoon, Cann announced that he is resigning as the head football coach at Landrum, but will continue as athletic director.He&squo;s spent the days leading up to the announcement reliving the funny post-game interviews, the players he&squo;s coached, a region championship and the many ups and downs he&squo;s experienced as Landrum&squo;s head coach.When he first took the job at Landrum High School seven years ago, someone told him that he was crazy for taking the job, he said. That person told him that only baseball could win at Landrum.&uot;We have blown that theory out of the water,&uot; Cann said.Cann proved that wrong himself in 2005 when the Cardinal football team won its first region championship since 1981. And the last two years, Landrum was just three points from winning it again the last two years.Since taking over the program in 2001, the Cardinals have had six players sign college scholarships to play football and three players walk-on to football teams.With the success that Cann and his coaching staff have built, the program has continued to grow. The program had been averaging 90 kids playing football, but this year 103 kids suited up from seventh grade up. Cann is quick to point out that he&squo;s had plenty of help from the school&squo;s administration and the district&squo;s administration. He&squo;s also had a great coaching staff, he said.The reasons behind the resignation are simple. First, the job of athletic director has grown. Landrum has expanded the athletic program to 23 sports and could add a 24th next year.&uot;There is not enough time in the day to do both jobs in the manner I demand of myself, which is to be at my best at all times,&uot; he said.Secondly, family played a role in the decision. His son Mark is competing for the starting quarterback job at Marshall and his daughter Caroline is a three sport standout at Landrum.But no matter what, Cann is still 100 percent a Cardinal, he said. &uot;My work ethic will not change as we continue to grow and build our program,&uot; Cann said. &uot;My goal is to lead this program in such a way as to give our coaches the support they deserve and our athletes the resources they need to grow as productive, young people and strive to be champions on and off the field.&uot;Cann&squo;s record at Landrum was 29-47. The search for a new football coach will begin this week. Applications are expected from inside the Cardinal program and outside.
