Raymond Leonard Costine

Raymond (Ray) Leonard Costine, 95, of Tryon, N.C., passed away Monday, July 11, 2016. He is survived by wife, Sally Swanson Costine.

He was born in Springfield, Mass. on January 8, 1921, to the late Harold Costine and Ella Mae Costine.

Raymond served in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II, as a sergeant, for three years in the Pacific on the islands of Oahu, Canton, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Mass. with a BS in chemical engineering in 1950. He was a member of AIChE, Phi Sigma Kappa and Pi Delta Epsilon. He retired as director of process engineering at Cryovac, division of W.R. Grace in Duncan, S.C. in 1986.

Ray and Sally are members of Tryon Presbyterian Church in Tryon, N.C.

In addition to his wife, Raymond is survived by two sons: Andrew Costine and his wife, Lynn, of Tryon, N.C.; Peter Costine of Raleigh, N.C.; three daughters, Sandra Watson and her husband, Mike Watson, of Augusta, Ga.; Robin Berkman and her husband, Benjamin Berkman, of Charlotte, N.C.; Wendy Winstead and her husband Ronnie, of Atlanta, Ga. Grandchildren include Courtney Watson Maggied (husband, Adam), Rev. Michael Watson (wife, Melody), Matthew Watson (wife, Jennifer), Kelsey Berkman, Erik Berkman, Zachary Winstead, Sarah Costine, Anna Costine, Emily Costine, Will Costine and a brother, Richard Costine of Spencerport, N.Y.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Costine of Palm Harbor, Fla. and a sister, Betty Nunn of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Ray will be cremated and a memorial service will be determined at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Habitat or Tryon Presbyterian Church.
