Fatal motorcycle wreck occurs near Landrum Tuesday: One charged with two counts of DUI

A motorcycle wreck occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Hwy 14 and Lexington Road on Tuesday afternoon, 1.48 miles west of the City of Landrum.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Troop 3 and Cpl. Bill Rhyne responded to the scene. According to Rhyne, the two parties involved in the collision were Harley Simms Beck, a 42-year-old male from Fountain Inn, S.C. driving a 2013 Chevy pick-up truck, and James Wellington Blackwell, from Travelers Rest, S.C., along with Chloe Allison Duncan, 19, on a 1999 Harley Davidson.

According to a statement prepared by Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger Wednesday, Duncan succumbed to her injuries when she and Blackwell were ejected from the motorcycle after being struck by Beck and his truck from the rear.

Neither Duncan nor Blackwell had been wearing helmets at the time of this incident.

Blackwell was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Tuesday evening. Beck was charged with felony DUI with death and felony DUI with great bodily injury and is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Facility. Beck had been wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision, according to Cpl. Rhyne.

On Wed., May 4, Clevenger released a statement saying Blackwell died at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center following the motorcycle crash. Clevenger added his office will complete a further examination as to what caused his death at a later time.
