Who owns Lake Lanier?

To the editor:

In a Letter to the Editor that appeared in your newspaper of February 24, 2016, the question was asked, “Who Owns Lake Lanier?” The answer to the question can be found in the recorded land records of Greenville County.

It is unfortunate that Rod Serling (the creator of the “Twilight Zone”) is no longer with us.  He would have found that there is an additional dimension beyond our sight and sound and it is the “Tryon Zone.”

In the 30 plus years that Tryon has owned Lake Lanier and its associated dam, there has been an endless spiral of disingenuousness, greed, ignorance and designed irresponsibility on the part of the Town’s government. Thus, it is easy to understand Mr. Squires’ question.

When I purchased my home on Lake Lanier in 1999, I was able in the autumn, with the warm daylight periods and the cool evenings, to enjoy an aroma that arose from the lake. It was the smell of fresh water.

Today in 2016, there is a different aroma – the smell is somewhere between a wet dog and a child’s diaper that needs attention. Tryon, you are to be complimented for your diligent stewardship.

So, Mr. Squires, regarding your other written concerns about Lake Lanier, I recommend that you approach the town officials directly. I must warn you though that it could be a fruitless effort as the peoples’ Peoples said to me – “Mr. Verbonic, you do not live in our town so I do not have to give you any time.”
