Polk women edge E. Henderson to begin season

With ten seconds to go, and with Polk County leading by just two points on Tuesday, Nov. 24, the Wolverines’ Hayley Kropp sank a foul shot, to help Polk edge East Henderson, 37-34, in the first women’s varsity basketball game of the regular season.

Kropp, who finished the game with a triple double (26 points, ten steals and 16 rebounds), still amazes Polk varsity coach Brandy Alm.

“She’s just a monster on the boards,” Alm said of Kropp, who stands a modest 5 feet 7 inches. “She reads the boards like Dennis Rodman.” Rodman, as NBA fans know, was far from tall, but lightning fast, and in the right place at the right time.

Autumn Owen added ten points for the Wolverines.

Alm pointed out that her young team features three freshmen, four sophomores and one junior. Only two returning starters (Kropp and Owen) are on the squad.

Polk’s next game is at home against Cherokee, another non-conference team, on Tuesday, Dec. 1. Game time is set for 6:30. On Dec. 3, the Wolverines will visit Brevard for more non-conference action. Game time is also 6:30 p.m.
