The Well, with the help of the City of Landrum, will be holding its second annual Labor Day event.

Event organizer and lead pastor for The Well, Brannon Poore, provided Landrum’s City Council with a recap of the previous year’s event as preview of what’s in store for 2015.

“I think it was very successful,” said Poore.

He estimated between 3,000 and 4,000 attendees, based on information cards and amount of food distributed.

“We took up a lot of contact cards and drew a lot of outside people to Landrum,” Poore said.

The 2014 Summer Sizzle featured a carnival, miniature train, bounce house, live music, giveaways, and thousands of hot dogs.

All of these were provided free of cost to the public.

“I had people trying to pay me all night long,” Poore said. “They couldn’t believe everything was free.”

“We reached a lot of people that can’t afford to go places like Frankie’s Fun Park or Dave and Busters,” he added.

This year, the event will follow much of the same outline, aside from live music played at the depot.

“It was almost like we had two main things going on that were competing against each other,” Poore said. “This year we’re going to focus our attention on the carnival and fireworks.

The Well will be supplying a sound system to provide music and means to make announcements. The group plans to use the money saved to expand on other attractions.

Landrum council members voted in July to approve a $5,000 sponsorship to match The Well’s contributed funds.

Although there was a large turnout to last year’s Summer Sizzle, the event competed with Columbus’ Fourth of July firework show, which was pushed back due to weather.

“We’re expecting an even bigger crowd this year,” said Landrum Mayor Bob Briggs.

Summer Sizzle will take place on Trade Avenue in Landrum from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5.

“We just wanted to love on the community and provide something fun that would be free,” said Poore. “It can only benefit Landrum in every way to help lift people up.”
