Polk County Sheriff’s Office seeks donations for Pounds for Paws program

Polk County Sheriff’s Office pet food drive, Pounds for Paws, was started close to seven years ago and has helped to feed more than 300 animals throughout this time. Donated food is distributed to nonprofit organizations and households in the county. The Pounds for Paws program was started by Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Officer, Michael “Cowboy” Herman, who approached Sheriff Donald Hill with a request to assist households.

The poor economy and rising costs of living puts a strain on many people’s households and the nonprofit organizations.

“The true reality,” says Herman, “is that you have husbands and wives, due to a passing of a spouse, are living alone. Their children do not live nearby, they are on a fixed income and the most precious thing to them is a furry four legged friend, which can sometimes be their only company throughout the day and night. The thought of having to choose between their financial needs and their pet’s needs can be heartbreaking – that’s what this drive is all about.”

However, funds for this program are critically low and the pantry is empty and assistance is needed. New, unopened bags of cat and dog food can be dropped off at the Sheriff’s Office. Monetary donations are welcomed as well. Also, if anyone has a Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control trap/cage not in use, please contact the sheriff’s office.
