Pam Stone, a popular author, radio host and columnist for the Tryon Daily Bulletin, will return to the set of the sitcom “Coach” after a 20-year hiatus.

Stone starred in 24 episodes over nine seasons as Judy Watkins, women’s basketball coach and enemy of series star and football coach Hayden Fox, played by Craig T. Nelson.

The series began in 1989 and concluded in 1997 with Coach Fox and his wife Christine adopting a child.

Bill Fagerbakke, who played Dauber Dybinski, will join Nelson and Stone for the 13-episode contract ordered by NBC. The series brings Coach Fox out of retirement as an assistant coach to help kick-start an ivy-league football program in Pennsylvania for which his now adult son is head coach.

“While there was speculation, there was no offer or contract until last night and I really had no idea everything would happen so breathtakingly fast,” wrote Stone in an email to the Bulletin Wednesday morning. She left immediately for the 10-day shoot of the pilot episode at Universal Studios in California.

“NBC clearly believes in the massive star power of Craig and the creative genius behind the camera, Barry Kemp,” said Stone. Kemp, series creator and writer, will return as executive producer, according to NBC.com. Kemp was also involved with the production of Newhart and Patch Adams, said Stone.

Coach is one of many 90s sitcoms to receive a revival in the coming months, with the X-Files and Heroes following suit.

Stone credits the movement to the power of nostalgia and viewers growing tired of reality television shows.

A premiere date has not been determined.
