Dorothy Lasco will be hanging her wood sculptures at the Depot at Millard & Company from Aug. 3 through Sept. 10. The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday, Aug. 7 from 5-7 p.m.

A newcomer to the Tryon art community, Lasco will be celebrating the power of her imagination with work that ranges from story boards that may contain inspiring or humorous quotes, to more abstract pieces. After completing an assignment in a design class requiring wood, Dorothy discovered that it was the medium that most excited her. Her passion for wood has continued to inspire her whether she uses found objects or pieces of old decaying tree bark still living with the protective tree spirits that challenge her to give it beauty by embracing its imperfections.

Grateful for the vast range of choices and opportunities wood provides, Lasco chooses quiet colors, often simply black or white, which offer the freedom to focus on the wood’s texture and shape, uncovering the mystery in the cracks and crevices.

She says she has been influenced by the sculpture of the great Louise Nevelson. The glittering ornamental two-dimensional works of Gustav Klimt excite her as well as the powerful shapes of artist Georgia O’Keefe.

Lasco is a member of Tryon Painters and Sculptors where recently she displayed one of her wood sculptures.

See her work displayed at The Depot Gallery at Millard & Company at 22 Depot St. in Tryon. The gallery is open through the Depot Plaza entrance during business hours on weekdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
