Following several months of discussion, R.E. “Sonny” Mevers and Crys Armbrust have concluded transfer of the 289 S. Trade Street property to the Town of Tryon. The deed transfer occurred on Thursday, July 23 at the Tryon Town Hall, with Pam Justice acting as Notary Public. Documents thereafter were tendered to Town Attorney Bailey A. Nager for filing.

The approximate 3,200 square feet modernist quadruplex, sitting on .78 acres, was designed in the early 1970’s by Holland Brady (latterly of Brady Trakas Architects) and Mike Brannon. The building has served a number of professional and retail uses across the years, including tenancies by Betty Sturgis Dress Shop, Carolina Travel, Fredericks Design Studio and Tryon Riding & Hunt Club, among others.

The Town of Tryon’s plans for the property, which includes 19 parking spaces, are yet to be determined by Tryon Town Council.

Armbrust commented, “Mevers’ donation of this property will no doubt have long-range, positive benefits for our whole community.” Armbrust is the former economic development director for the town of Tryon and is currently running for Tryon Town Council.

“Sonny’s civic generosity,” he continued, “is very much appreciated and stands as yet another shining example of the present Tryonite esprit de corps that builds our community and moves us ever forward.”
