First responders are known for thinking of others first, and because of their line of work, they are frequently in harm’s way. Unfortunately, first responders can be hurt or killed while performing their jobs, leaving their families in the unfortunate situation of picking up the pieces.

The pieces can include settling a will, or determining end of life care – things that most people don’t like to think about, let alone plan for. But when an estimated 80 percent of first responders don’t have estate-planning documents in order, the Sheffron and Bradley law firm found a way to help first responders.

“The relatively low number with an emergency legal plan also speaks to the selflessness of first responders; the very nature of their profession is to think of others first,” said firm owner Scott Sheffron.

Created in the spring, Emergency Planning for Emergency Heroes is available to all first responders, their support staff and their spouses.

“We offer them a free will, along with healthcare and emergency documents – things that most people don’t have, unfortunately,” said Sheffron.

These documents include a durable power of attorney, and health care power of attorneys, and a simple will.

With the information gathered by an online questionnaire, a draft document is created. Within 30 days, a staff member will schedule a time for the eligible recipient to visit the office and sign the documents.

In exchange for the service, the firm requests a donation of $25 to any local 501c charity.

“We just want to help the community,” said Sheffron, “and nobody works for us that doesn’t have that same attitude.”

Many first responders have already taken advantage of the program. According to Sheffron, the only thing holding some back is superstition.

“For whatever reason, people think they are going to die as soon as they get a will,” said Sheffron. Ryan Bradley, his business partner, sighed and nodded in agreement.

The firm has also recently acquired a new office building located at 273 E. Mills Street in Columbus.

The building was previously located across from the Polk County courthouse and used as the board of elections office. It was later relocated in anticipation of the Womack building’s construction.

Sheffron, Bradley and Associates’ main office is located in Hendersonville on 317 N. Washington Street. Another office is located in Charlotte.

Scott H. Sheffron created the firm nearly 17 years ago after becoming licensed to practice in both North Carolina and Florida 1998.

Ryan A. Bradley, a North Carolina native who practiced law in Virginia before returning home to Saluda, later joined him as a business partner.

“The majority of work we do here is in family law and estate planning,” said Sheffron.

The firm also specializes in criminal defense, immigration and personal injury.

Sheffron and Bradley, being Polk County residents, purchased the new office in hopes of providing a better service. The office will be used to meet local clients and prevent lengthy commutes.

“We’ve been very successful here, and we like to give back,” said Sheffron. “We’re most proud of what we do for community.”
