Richard Davis is pleased to have more players than he needs for a bare bones tennis roster this spring.

Davis, Polk County High School’s head tennis coach, has a dozen players of varying talent to fill the six spots necessary to be at least competitive in matches.

“We’re not going to beat the good teams,” Davis admitted, “but we’re not going to lose to the bad teams. I’m tickled to death to have players. At least we’ve got the bodies this year. The good news is that most of them will be back next year.”

Davis’s number one player (who gets matched against other schools’ number one players) is Tyler Oxtoby. Number two is Payton Stott, followed by third through sixth Henry Monts, Joshua Kornmaker, Ben Deffner (an exchange student from Germany) and Malik Miller.

After last Thursday’s 8-1 loss at home to a very good Owen, the Wolverines were 2-6 overall, and 1-2 in the conference. Four of their losses have been to two non-conference teams — West Henderson and T.C. Roberson. Roberson, Davis noted, fields a very good team this year.

Today, March 31, they’re home again, facing Mountain Heritage (beginning at 3:30; other matches begin at 4 p.m.). Tomorrow, they host Hendersonville. On Thursday, the Wolverines visit Avery, making three conference matches this week.
