Led by Samantha Firby’s hat trick and overall dominating play, Polk County’s varsity women’s soccer team never gave visiting Mitchell a chance on Wednesday evening, March 18, as the Wolverines peppered the Mountaineers’ goal for a 7-0 conference win.

Polk, which faces conference rival Avery coming up on Monday, March 23, is 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Western Highlands Conference competition.

Even before Firby first found the visitors’ net, Polk had dominated, and it seemed just a matter of time before they put points on the board. Firby scored the first of her two consecutive unassisted goals with 28:22 left in the first half, and added the second with just under 21 minutes remaining in that period.

With 4:24 left in the half, Addie Lynch found the net assisted by Elena Preston.

Polk led 3-0 at the half, but that would change quickly. With just over a minute gone in the second half, Firby booted in her goal number three, assisted by Ashley Love.

Love, in turn, rifled one in for Polk’s fifth goal with four minutes off the clock in the second half. This time, Emily Kocher assisted. Alyssa Climer scored the Wolverines’ sixth goal, fed by Hanna O’Brien.

With just over seven minutes left in play, Sarah Phipps, who narrowly missed several other shots on goal, put one into the net as Lynch assisted.

“In all we came out and did what we should do,” Charles commented. “We did a good job, and won a game we’re supposed to win.” Avery will be a tougher match, he cautioned.

On Monday, March 16, Polk blanked Mountain Heritage, also 7-0.
