Republicans, whites, females lead Polk in votes

Polk County’s 2014 election ended with more Republicans voting than any other party, more whites than any other race and more females voting than males, according to the official canvass of votes completed by the county board of elections Friday, Nov. 14.

Out of a total of 7,643 votes cast for the Nov. 4 election, 2,871 Republicans voted, compared to 2,408 unaffiliated voters, 2,347 Democrats and 15 Libertarians.

Females outvoted males by 558 votes, according to results. There were 4,085 females who voted compared to 3,527 males and 31 undesignated.

In demographics, white voters significantly led voting with 7,224 of the total. There were 297 black voters, 62 undesignated, 54 other and six American Indian votes cast this year, according to the official results.

Republicans cast more votes this year than Democrats, unaffiliated and Libertarian voters in six out of seven precincts. Tryon was the only precinct that had more Democrats than Republicans vote with unaffiliated voters also casting more votes in Tryon than Republicans.

The Coopers Gap polling place favored Republicans with 320 compared to 135 Democrat votes, 169 unaffiliated and two Libertarian votes.

Columbus 7 (Polk County High School) slightly favored Republicans with 398 votes compared to 374 Democratic votes, 345 unaffiliated votes and two Libertarian votes.

Columbus 8 (Isothermal Community College) favored Republicans with 583 votes compared to 450 unaffiliated votes, 337 Democratic votes and one Libertarian vote.

Green Creek also favored Republicans, who cast 512 votes, compared to 406 Democrats, 385 unaffiliated and no Libertarians.

Saluda had 285 Republicans vote, 252 unaffiliated, 204 Democrats and three Libertarians vote.

Tryon had 600 Democrats, 563 unaffiliated, 473 Republicans and two Libertarians cast votes.

White Oak saw 300 Republicans, 291 Democrats, 244 unaffiliated and five Libertarians.

There were more female voters in all precincts except Coopers Gap, where 315 males voted compared to 309 females.
