Polk County High School’s varsity football team enters the first round of state playoff action at home this evening, against a team with a deceptive record, and some talented players.

The Wolverines, 8-3 overall, and 5-1 in Western Highlands Conference competition this season, face the Lexington Yellowjackets, who are 3-8 overall, but who have won three consecutive games.

Polk coach Jamie Thompson notes that, “come post-season play, earlier records are basically out the window.” Thompson emphasized that the Yellowjackets “have played a tough non-conference schedule.” Indeed, all three of their wins, including their 49-0 stomping of West Davidson on Oct. 24, have been in their conference.

Standout Lexington players include their quick quarterback, Devin Cross (5). Jakishe Page (15) is the Yellowjacket’s best receiver. In addition, “They have a very good running back, and a quick defensive line,” Thompson remarked.  Lexington runs a counter trap offense, he said.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines ended the regular season with a character-building win over a talented Hendersonville team. And, notes Thompson, “We should be at full strength. The only question mark is Dillon Overholt.”

As Thompson might say, this game is the Wolverines’ most important of the season, because it’s their next game.

Opening kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Weather conditions look to be dry, but chilly.
