A couple of runs here, three runs there, plus great pitching from Ashley Scruggs and Polk County High school’s softball team whipped Owen 10-1, last Thursday, March 27.
“This was a big win, where we kept tacking on runs,” said head coach Jeff Wilson, as Polk went to 6-2 overall.
Scruggs fanned 11 batters, issued just two walks and yielded just six hits.
“The 11 strikeouts were huge,” Wilson said. “I thought (catcher) Ashley Kropp did a great job behind the plate.”
Scruggs also pitched her way out of bases-loaded and second-and-third jams.
Polk scored early, plating two runs in the first, aided by a walk, an Owen error and aggressive base running.
Polk scored three each in the fifth and sixth, with Brittany Jones smacking a two-out RBI double. In the game, Kassidy Reynolds got a key hit and Maddy Foy added a hit and a walk, as eight Wolverine players connected for hits.
On March 24, Hayley Kropp (four-for-four, plus a walk) hit for the cycle, while Ashley Kropp was three-for-three, as the Kropp sisters combined for nine RBIs in Polk’s 18-0 romp over Avery County.
Brandi Cordell also hit well to help pace the Wolverines.
