For the first time in the history of the Heritage Crafts Gallery at Tryon Arts and Crafts School, the opportunity has been given to artists to enter a Juried Art Exhibit.  The show entitled “Craft Tryon” will open on April 25 and run until May 30.  It will feature work in a variety of media including metals, glass, clay, jewelry, wood, fiber and collage/mixed media.
A call for artists is in place to encourage craftspeople from the whole of Western North Carolina and the upstate of South Carolina to submit their best pieces for jurying.  Cash awards will be given to those pieces that display excellence in craftsmanship, originality, and professional execution in the chosen media.
The jurors for the “Craft Tryon” exhibit are David  Voorhees and Molly Sharp. Jeweler, Molly Sharp, and potter, David Voorhees, live in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina.
They met while attending Penland School of Crafts in 1995 and within a year had opened their own studio/gallery named the Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat Rock, N.C.
They expanded their gallery to represent all mediums, working with close to 500 regional artists through the years.
They closed the gallery in 2013 to spend more time in their own studios. They both have been creating their individual craft for over 25 years, much inspired by their surroundings.  Both are members of Southern Highland Craft Guild.
Artists who wish to enter the “Craft Tryon” show should first go to the Tryon Arts and Crafts School website at www.tryonartsandcrafts.org. to register online and download forms to be submitted with entries.  The take-in dates for submission are April 15 – 17 at the school located at 373 Harmon Field Road  in Tryon.
The opening reception for “Craft Tryon” will be held on   Friday, April 25 from 6 – 8:00 p.m.  Awards will be announced at 7 p.m. and the public is invited to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments.
