Commissioners vote to change planning board terms, composition

Commission chair Michael Gage chimed in to stop the back and forth.

“For myself I was really wanting every township to be represented and to me that is the most important thing in this document,” Gage said.

More back and forth occurred about when the new terms were to begin each year. Pack suggested the terms begin on Jan. 1 and end on Dec. 31 each year. It was then asked if the date should not be the second meeting in February to give newly sworn in board of commissioners time to select new planning board members during election years.

County attorney Jana Berg said Feb. 1 to Jan. 31 would allow for the document to be perpetual rather than changing year after year based on commission meeting dates.

The new resolution also changes the makeup of the planning board.

Polk’s planning board consists of seven members and one alternate. The proposed wording of the amendment to the ordinance says to the extent possible, six of the seven seats shall be held by one resident of each of the county’s townships and the remaining member seat and alternate seat shall be an at-large member.

The current board includes three members from Columbus, one member from Green Creek, two from White Oak, one from Saluda and the alternate from Columbus. There is currently no representation from Tryon or Coopers Gap.
