Upstairs Artspace hosts “Philosophy of Art” course

Published 9:53 am Monday, September 30, 2013

Utilizing visual images of specific works of art, each class will consist of both lecture and discussion. Although the emphasis will be on the visual arts, other genres such as literature and music will be touched upon. The views of philosophers such as Plato, Kant, Wittgenstein and the contemporary philosopher Danto will be discussed. No assignments will be given, but there will be a suggested reading offered weekly for the next week’s session. For those unable to register for all six sessions, each class may be attended on an individual basis.

Fitzgerald has a Ph.D. in Philosophy, and has taught at Rutgers University, Ohio State University, Furman University and Wofford College. She has given presentations on the philosophy of art in Prague, Rome and Slovenia, as well as in the U.S. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to gather for a lively, accessible and informative exploration of the arts as interpreted through the study of philosophy.

Classes will be held every Monday evening from 6-7:30 p.m., beginning Oct. 7 and continuing through Nov. 18.
