- Residents at Laurel Hurst retirement community recently visited Overmountain Vineyards, a Polk County winery off Sandy Plains Road. The group sampled five different wines including a Chardonnay, Rose and a sweet Port. After their wine sampling, they had a picnic lunch and asked questions about the winery. Frank Lilly, owner, explained why oak barrels are like a spice and give a different flavor to wine. He no longer uses oak barrels so that Overmountain wine tastes more like the true grape. The residents also drank out of stemless wine glasses, which they got to keep as a souvenir. Above: Frank Lilly explains about wine. Below: Kate Liebfried, Jean Gregonis and Vicki Liebfried.
