Recently, I came across a very old and very interesting report that I had forgotten about. Apparently, I had put this report into a small box with other historical items, and somehow, this box of historical information had made its way into my attic. Don’t ask me how, because I don’t know! Since finding this box of treasures, I have learned a little more about our area.

Did you know that Green Creek was once the most populated township in Polk County? In 1910, 1,962 people lived in our township, but 1,664 people lived in the Tryon township that year. I was surprised to learn the Town of Tryon had 700 citizens that year, and the Town of Columbus had only a population of 122. The total population of Polk County was 7,640 in 1910.

Question: Does anyone have a picture of NC Senator Elbert (nickname Eb) Westbrook, and/or the general store the he operated in Sandy Plains during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s? Also, we would like to know if Sen. Westbrook was the only state senator from Polk County to represent us in Raleigh.

If you have any pictures or information about Mr. Westbrook, please call me at 828- 863-2437.
