The Landrum girls’ varsity basketball team came out on top over Polk County, 49-47, in their season opener at home Friday night.

Landrum fell behind the Wolverines at the end of the first quarter 16-13. This sent them into the locker room at halftime down but they came back stronger at the beginning of the second half.

They tied the game and went slightly ahead going into the third quarter, 34-33. Senior guard Lauren Pitts played great defense to slow down the Wolverines in the fourth quarter to a nail-biting end.

Taylor Jenkins scored 15 points on the evening for Landrum. Senior guard Macy Atkins’ valuable free throw shooting also helped lead the Lady Cardinals.

For Polk, Hayley Kropp put 13 points away, while Savannah Deaver grabbed 9 points.
